THE GREEK LANGUAGE
Democratie, armonia, tiyatro, music, Architettura, protagonist… If you speak French, Spanish, Turkish, English, Italian or even German, then you know for sure what these words mean. Of course, you may not know that all these words are of Greek origin.
Greek is a language with a continuity for almost 3,500 years. It holds an important historical place in the history of the Western world. Along with the Latin texts, the Greek texts of antiquity are part of the classical science. The roots of the Greek language have been used for centuries and they are still used to form new words in other languages. Many Greek words can be found in almost all the major languages of the world and express basic meanings of the international scientific and technological vocabulary.
The Greek alphabet used with some modifications from the 9th century BC. formed the basis of the Latin alphabet, which was later adopted by many languages worldwide.
But Greek is a living language that continues its journey through time. Today Greek in its modern form is the official language of Greece and one of the two official languages of Cyprus. It is also one of the 24 official languages of the European Union. It is estimated that the total number of people worldwide who speak Greek as a first or second language is around 25 million.
